Mesopotamia, literally meaning the ‘Land between the Rivers’, includes modern Iraq, north east Syria, and south east Turkey spanning across the rivers of the Tigris and Euphrates. As the cradle of urban civilization, many modern developments owe their origins to ancient Mesopotamia such as the invention of writing, complex administration and astrology . The Mesopotamian civilization witnessed the flowering of sophisticated art and literature together with remarkable achievements in intellectual, spiritual and scientific realms that still have a profound influence on modern life today. Showcasing more than 170 artefacts from the British Museum, this exhibition explores significant episodes of ancient Mesopotamian history from 3500 BC to 539 BC– the birth of cities in Sumer, the powerful military empire of Assyria and the development and legacy of cosmopolitan Babylon.

Pablo Picasso (October 25, 1881 – April 8, 1973) was a Spanish painter, draughtsman, and sculptor. He is one of the most recognized figures in 20th-century art. He is best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles embodied in his work.

The exhibition at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum from May 19 to July 22 includes work from his Blue, Rose and Cubist periods as well as Neoclassical and Expressionist pieces, the organisers said.

Musee National Picasso chairwoman Anne Baldassari said she was excited to show the work in China. The exhibition has already been shown in Shanghai and Chengdu.

“In Shanghai it was very important … because it was the first Picasso show in China,” she told AFP as the pieces were unpacked and mounted in the Heritage Museum at Sha Tin.

“It was a very strong discovery for the Chinese public.”Baldassari said interest in the exhibition among Chinese visitors reflected the growing appreciation of Western art among Chinese collectors and dealers.

“Picasso was very impressed by the way Chinese painters were considering art as a language and painting as a sign, and not as a representation,” she said.

“Because he was fighting against the idea of representation, he was always looking at Chinese painting (and) African sculpture as a main reference.

“He was deeply convinced that Chinese painting and African sculpture were bringing something into France — a new approach, maybe not new, a very different approach.”

The Picasso exhibition is on a world tour while the Musee National Picasso is closed for renovation. It has already visited the United States and Australia.

Hong Kong has emerged as a major centre of international art in recent years, with this week’s Hong Kong International Art Fair expected to attract more than 60,000 visitors and hundreds of dealers from around the world.

Prestigious Western galleries such as Gagosian, White Cube and Acquavella have recently opened franchises in the semi-autonomous southern city in a bid to tap the exploding Chinese market for high-end art.

A Documentary Film of Picasso

In association with this exhibition, a documentary film of Picasso (duration: 1 hour and 43 minutes) is being screened in Orientation Theatre at the ground floor of the Museum during the exhibition period. The film is provided by the Musée National Picasso, Paris.

Comprising mainly black and white silent film footage and sectioned into nine chapters according to varied themes, the documentary is a selection of short clips showing Picasso at home or at work. It shows the artist at his studios working on his paintings, ceramics or sculptures, as well as with friends and family on various occasions. The film also features images of Picasso’s theatre projects and close-up shots of some of Picasso’s famous works, through which the audience can enjoy viewing in detail some of his unique body of works, such as the paper sculptures with bullfighting themes, or his series of ceramics. Majority of which belonging to the Picasso Archives at the Musée National Picasso, these valuable video clips show Picasso under the lens of the media, his family and friends. Capturing the artist in the most direct and candid manner, they offer an unusual angle for us to further understand this great artistic master.

Free viewing, admission ticket is not required. Limited seats on a first-come-first-served basis.

* Mainly black and white silent film with limited French narration, and no English or Chinese subtitles
